PETE recyclable plastic #1

* Many communities do not yet recycle containers made of pp (e.g. margerine tubs), so the move toward making reusable bags may increase pp's recyclability.

Energy and Environment Mission

In the autumn of 2007, the Board of Deacons announced its new First Pres Energy and Environment mission. An Energy and Environment Group ("Go Green") convened for the first time in early winter to brainstorm ideas for motivating the congregation to take actions. When we work collectively, we can make a difference for God's Earth. This is as it should be.

While there are times when energy and environment information is grim, this group will develop congregational education and actions with attitudes of spirituality, hope, joy, and fun.

"Buy Fresh Buy Local Quad Cities" and other reusable bags. Locally-produced foods: Whitey's Ice Cream, Farmer's Hen House Eggs, Kalona, IA Mennonites; Amana, IA, Canadian Bacon; Barilla Spaghetti, Ames, IA; Harvest Bread, Bettendorf, IA

Action 1: Purchase at least 5 reusable grocery bags and keep them in your car so you have them when you drive to the store. These black and green bags are sold for no more than $1.50 each at Schnucks and Hy-Vee stores and are made of easy-to-clean polypropylene (pp*) plastic, with a fabric feel.

Action 2: Be in the "Eat Local" movement. Try to buy locally grown and processed foods. In the photo, the products peeking from inside and around the bags fit our family's attempts to more often buy and eat local foods. The Eat Local movement reduces transportation time and distance, increases freshness, and supports area producers/businesses.

Action 3: Eat spiritually. "Plan a simple meal . . . serving locally produced products and identifying the source of the food products: name of farm/ranch, farmers’ market, neighborhood grocery." (Source: "We are what we eat." Report to the 2002 PCUSA General Assembly)
This is easiest in the harvest season, of course, but the idea is approachable even in deep winter. Ask your grocery manager for suggestions (don't forget local butcher shops, Greatest Grains - Harrison Street, bakeries, and any store that sells Amana or Amish/Mennonite jarred foods). The products in the photo can get you started on a simple meal.

Action 4: Email the Energy and Environment Group by clicking this image: blue arrow, and tell us about actions you are beginning to take—or always take—so we can begin to get a profile of our congregation's efforts. You become part of the motivation of others' actions through your messages. (A photo attachment sized under 500 Mg is welcomed.)
