The Season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days — like the flood of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to Ninevah to repent, and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness. (The Sundays in Lent are not counted in this reckoning of the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as every Lord’s Day is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.) In the early church, Lent was a time of preparation for the celebration of baptism at the Easter Vigil. In many communities of faith it remains a time to equip and nurture candidates for baptism and confirmation and to reflect deeply on the theme of baptismal discipleship.
Ash Wednesday, February 22
Worship Services at 12:00 Noon and 7:00 pm

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey to remembering God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.  The season of Lent is a time to prepare for the celebration of redemption through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.  We begin this holy season by acknowledging our sin and our need for repentance while also receiving the forgiveness of our sin by the grace of God.  Lent is marked by self-examination and penitence, by prayer and fasting, by practicing works of love, and by reading and reflecting on God’s holy Word.
Lenten Small Group Opportunity Led by Pastor Miller
Look in upcoming bulletin announcements and in the March newsletter to learn about a Lenten season small group opportunity.  This will be a time to reflect and re-discover God in our lives. You may sign-up on Sunday mornings for one of these gathering times, which will take place at Pastor Miller’s home.  To prepare for the gathering be sure to pick up a Life --Timeline sheet. This season of Lent we will share fiath stories about how God calls us into either new purposes, or to unexpected places, or to remain faithful right where we are in our lives. This a journey worth taking.

                          Our youth will hold
                             soup pots at the
church doors on Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday.  They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting.

All of the money collected is donated to a charity selected by the church — none of the money is sent to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. Organizers only ask that each church report their collection so national totals can be determined and announced.

Please support the youth of our church in this effort to “love our neighbors” by dropping your dollar in the soup pot on February 5.
